Lets start off and talk about the beer straight up. I know i’m not the only one noticing the excessive amount of IPA’s out there. Yes, the IPA is a great beer, I think we’ve had just about every variation of an IPA thrown at us in the past 5 years. It’s time to toss things up and start getting some new styles out to the public. If I visit your brewery, I know you’ve got more then an IPA and Pale ale on tap. Bottle it, distribute it, we’re ready for it.

I understand what I can find in my grocery store is not completely in your control. But at beerfest, I’m tasting your IPA? We go to Beerfest to try new stuff, we go to find that beer that WOW’s us and you send your IPA?. If I wanted to drink IPA’s I would have gone to the grocery store, loaded up on the variety of a million different(yet the same) IPA’s they have there. Instead, I went to Beerfest in hopes of finding something new and exciting and I found the same old….

Overall I felt the beer was disappointing, I counted around 24 IPA’s or so and god knows how many pale ales. There were maybe 3 or 4 of those IPA’s that were unique. However, with all that said, I did still thoroughly enjoy the beer and the festival and I had a great time.

We decided to venture up to Mt. Hood and try out “The Microbrewery with an Altitude”, so we stuffed ourselves into the car and drove up to Ice Axe Grill, which is home of Mt. Hood Brewing Company.

We were starving and thirsty, and when we walked in we were immediately greeted with smiles and hellos. The décor wasn’t the most happenin and hip, but really, we didn’t care. It was cozy…and we were there for the beer and food anyway.

Started things off with Multor Porter and Cascadian Pale Ale. They also had the pale ale on cask but my wife was in the mood for cold and crisp so she stuck with the draft. We both went straight for the Old English Cheddar Pub Burger and fries. UH-MAZING. The burger was insanely good. The fries? Oh, the fries. So crispy and delicious. They also had some ranch on crack…don’t know what was in it or why it was special, but special it was. See, places like this sneak up on you. That’s why you can’t judge a bar/pub by its cover…sometimes the most mediocre looking places will kick your ass with their beer and food.

After we finished our food, we ordered more beer (what, did you think we’d go all the way up to Mt. Hood and just have one beer?), this time it was Hogsback Stout and Ice Axe IPA. The Hogsback oatmeal stout was just freaking awesome, they did an excellent job on this one. I highly recommend getting one while you’re there.

Definitely worth the trip. Good beer, good food, and good service. Plus, you can wander around the town while you’re up there. Good times, I tell ya.

Pranqster has grown to be one of my favorite beers, which makes North Coast Brewing Co. one of my favorite breweries. Pranqster is a beautiful golden, slightly hazy beer with a lot of head. It’s an excellent Belgian beer that has the perfect amount of carbonation on the nose and finishes with that great fruity Belgian Golden flavor. Often with Belgians I find my biggest complaint is too much carbonation, or the carbonation amount doesn’t balance with body and flavor. This is not the case with Pranqster; this beer is very well balanced and extremely smooth without losing its awesomeness and quality.

A beer from hops, a beer from yeast, a beer from malt & water, this beer is a feast. Limited, surely not by taste, this beer has its place. This beer warms, this beer mourns, this beer is beer drinking in all forms. This edition of lager is an excellent beer of unlimited enjoyment.

Strong vs. Weak

I’m sure if you’re reading this blog, you’ve dabbled in the many beer rating websites out there. Personally, I’m getting quite annoyed with these sites… the “let’s rate the strongest beer the highest mentality” can get old. Any true beer lover knows that alcohol content has nothing to do with the quality of the beer. Granted, beers with higher alcohol content have typically been sitting around, aging longer, getting better and better by the day, just crying for you to drink them. Having high alcohol content or being dark in color doesn’t automatically qualify them as superior beers. I’ll agree, some of them are fantastic beers, but some of them are absolutely terrible. Anyway, my point is to give some of the lower alcohol content beers a try. Don’t just listen to these beer rating websites. Low alcohol content doesn’t mean the beer sucks. Beer should be appreciated and enjoyed for reasons other than its alcohol content. I think that some less strong beers tend to get ignored by so called sophisticated beer judgers. And yes judger is an official term because I’m One Thousand Years Old and I say so. Just because your friends are hooooo raaaa’n because they can’t see through it doesn’t mean it’s God’s gift to beer. EVERY beer has its place; dark, light, strong, weak, hoppy and not. A true beer lover will learn to appreciate ALL beers.

RECIPE: Low Fat Beer Brownies

Replace the fat in brownies with beer! They turn out more on the cakey side and less on the fudgy side, but they don’t have the fat and they’re made with beer…so they’re cool.

Ingredients:
1 box of fudge brownie mix
2 eggs
Young’s Double Chocolate Stout

Make the brownies as directed on the box, except replace the water and oil with the beer! Sprinkle with powdered sugar when finished. **Note, this takes less time to bake than it says on the box, so keep an eye on it. You don’t want to overcook them. I may be updating this recipe after I play with it a little more.
